Stockholm Archipelago Ferry Guide: How to Visit Sweden’s Island Paradise

Why Visit the Stockholm Archipelago?

The Stockholm Archipelago is one of the best ways to spend a day escaping the hustle and bustle of Stockholm and discovering a quieter, more rustic side of Sweden.

Made up of more than 30,000 islands, islets, and skerries scattered throughout the Baltic Sea, the archipelago offers a completely different side of Sweden than you’ll find in the city. In fact, if you arrived in Stockholm by ferry from Finland, chances are you already sailed through part of it.

When I was researching how to plan a Stockholm Archipelago day trip, I found the information surprisingly difficult to piece together. Hopefully, this guide will make planning your trip a little easier.

What Makes the Stockholm Archipelago Unique?

As you travel between the islands, you’ll see idyllic Swedish cottages painted in the classic deep red with white trim,  perched on smooth rocky surfaces at the water’s edge. Some of the areas you pass by look that have been untouched by time.

As you begin making stops throughout the Archipelago, you get a glimpse into everyday Swedish life. During our journey, passengers came and went on their daily commutes — some taking the ferry home to their island communities after work, while others, like one family we noticed with luggage in tow, were heading back to Stockholm to begin their vacation, while others were heading into Stockholm for a weekend away.

This is a huge reason we love traveling the way locals do. It offers a small glimpse into everyday life that you just don’t get on a traditional tour. For a brief moment, you can imagine what it might be like to live there yourself.

Best Ferries for Exploring the Stockholm Archipelago?

There are a 2 main companies you can go with when traveling through the archipelago. Strömma Cinderellabåtarna and the SL Commuter Ferry Waxholmbolaget.

Guided Tours with Strömma – Cinderellabåtarna

Strömma offers a variety of Stockholm Archipelago day trips, including guided sightseeing cruises, full-day excursions, and trips to specific islands such as Sandhamn and Grinda.

These tours are perfect for first-time visitors who want a simple, curated experience. You show up, board the boat, and let someone else handle the planning.

Because these tours are popular, especially during the summer months, booking in advance is highly recommended.

If you’re short on time, Strömma also offers sightseeing cruises lasting between 1.5 and 3 hours with live commentary in both Swedish and English.

When we visited, passengers on the weekend tours were not allowed to disembark on the islands. Since our goal was to actually explore one of the islands, this was one of the main reasons we chose a different option.

Exploring Independently with Waxholmsbolaget

If you’re looking for a more authentic experience and want the freedom to explore on your own, I highly recommend Waxholmsbolaget.

These public ferries are used by both visitors and locals traveling throughout the archipelago. Riding them felt less like a tour and more like a small window into everyday life in Sweden.

The biggest advantage is flexibility. You can hop off and explore the islands at your own pace instead of simply viewing them from the boat.

How to Buy Tickets for Stockholm Archipelago Ferries

There is no need to book ahead or purchase tickets in advance if taking the SL Commuter Ferry. Purchasing tickets is extremely easy; just hop on a ferry and purchase a ticket on board. At the time of our visit, tickets run about Sek 60 or around $6.00 per person, or for unlimited island hoping you can use your  5 or 30-day prepaid travel card.

Quick Tip: Tickets are purchased on board and you can pay with a credit cards – preferably Mastercard or Visa, but cash is not accepted. Your ticket works like any other transportation ticket, as you will need it when disembarking.

The ferry itself is equipped with:

  • A small café serving sandwiches, coffee, and tea
  • Restrooms
  • Wheelchair-accessible facilities

The only downside is that you’ll need to plan your own route and understand the ferry schedules. Thankfully, Waxholmsbolaget does an excellent job posting maps and schedules at each stop, and the staff onboard were incredibly helpful whenever we had questions

We chose to go with Waxholmsbolaget, the company that operates the majority of ferries throughout the Stockholm Archipelago. There are also ticket booths at the main ports in Stockholm with helpful attendants who can answer any questions you may have.

We found the system surprisingly easy to navigate.

Where do you board the ferry for the Stockholm Archipelago?

Waxholmsbolaget ferries depart from two primary locations in Stockholm:

  • Slussen on Gamla Stan
  • Strömkajen, located in central Stockholm directly in front of the Grand Hotel

There are several departures each day, with the most frequent departures occurring in the morning.

Tips for Planning Your Stockholm Archipelago Day Trip

Strömma vs. Waxholmsbolaget: Which Ferry Should You Choose?

If your ideal day involves booking everything in advance, showing up, and having the entire experience planned for you, Strömma is probably your best option.

If you’re anything like us and enjoy exploring independently, traveling like a local, and having the flexibility to hop off and wander through small island communities, Waxholmsbolaget is the clear winner.

Understanding Ferry Schedules

Waxholmsbolaget does an amazing job at posting the ferry schedules at each stop along the route. The routes are color-coded and the boats are easily identifiable.

During peak season, ferries run about every hour or every hour and a half on popular routes.

If you’d like to plan ahead, download the SL Journey Planner app. It allows you to view routes, schedules, and purchase tickets directly from your phone. Download the SL Journey Planner app.

Which islands in the Archipelago should I visit?

When you take the SL Commuter Ferry, you are able to get off on most of the islands where the ferry stops.

Every ferry departing Stockholm passes through Vaxholm, and the journey takes roughly one hour.

If you have more time, consider visiting:

  • Grinda
  • Sandhamn
  • Utö
  • Svartsö

Just remember that ferry service becomes less frequent the farther you travel into the archipelago. Some islands only have a handful of departures each day, so make sure to check schedules carefully before setting out.

Visiting Vaxholm: The Perfect Stockholm Archipelago Day Trip

If you’re craving a slow-paced Swedish island town, Vaxholm is the perfect choice.

Technically, you could walk through the town in ten minutes, but I’d encourage you not to rush. Grab a coffee, sit in the town square, and simply watch daily life unfold around you.

After arriving, we wandered into town and found a small Thai restaurant. We ordered lunch and carried it to the square to eat outside.

At one point, it genuinely felt like we were the only people in existence. All we could hear were birds chirping and the occasional person passing through town.

It was one of those simple travel moments that sticks with you long after the trip is over.

FAQ about visiting Stockholm Archeplilago

Do I need to book tickets in advance?

For Strömma, absolutely. Tours can sell out during peak season, so booking ahead is highly recommended. More info here.

For Waxholmsbolaget, advance booking isn’t necessary. These are public ferries used by locals and visitors alike.

Can I get off the boat to explore the islands?

This depends on the company you choose.

When we visited, some Strömma tours only cruised past the islands without allowing passengers to disembark.

Waxholmsbolaget, on the other hand, allows you to hop off and explore at your leisure. This flexibility was one of the biggest reasons we chose them.

How long should you spend in the Stockholm Archipelago?

Honestly, as much time as you can.

The islands themselves are small and easy to explore, but this is one of those places that rewards slow travel.

Sit by the water. Listen to the birds. Watch the ferries come and go.

The archipelago isn’t a place to rush through—it’s a place to slow down and enjoy.

Is the Stockholm Archipelago Worth Visiting?

Taking a ferry through the Stockholm Archipelago was one of the highlights of our time in Sweden.

Watching the city slowly disappear and transform into rocky islands dotted with red Swedish cottages felt like stepping into another world. It was exactly the side of Sweden we had hoped to experience.

More than anything, I loved getting that small glimpse into how locals live. From commuters heading home after work to families traveling between islands, it felt like a genuine look at everyday life.

If you’re visiting Stockholm and have even half a day to spare, I highly recommend adding the archipelago to your itinerary.

Trust me—it’s worth it.
